Process GC Maintenance and Troubleshooting Tips

For process gas chromatographs to perform reliably, they require frequent data validation and proactive maintenance. Below, we discuss some of the diagnostic tools and issues you need to know about when it comes to process GC troubleshooting and maintenance.

Tip #1: The Importance of Verifying Your Process GC’s Flows

Checking your process analyzer’s carrier gas and detector flows is often a good first step when troubleshooting process GC problems.

Tip #2: Process GC Problems?  The Answer is in Your Chromatogram!

Most people don’t realize that the chromatogram is the most powerful diagnostic tool we have for troubleshooting process GCs.

Tip #3:  How Do You Know if Your Process GC is Generating Accurate Data?

Process GC owners must somehow verify on a regular basis that their GC data is suitably accurate and precise. Implementing a multifaceted analyzer validation program is the key.

Tip #4:  Spotting Interferences

There are numerous forms of interferences, all of which can hinder or seriously impair the accurate quantitation of your analytes and lead to inaccurate process GC data. Learn what to look for.

Tip #5:  Why Leak Checking is So Important

Large leaks of carrier, detector or sample gases within the process GC oven can be catastrophically dangerous – and even small leaks of carrier gasses can seriously impair your analyzer. Learn what you can do to prevent problems.

Tip #6: Why Have My Peaks Shifted?

There really are only a few reasons why peaks shift and do not appear on your chromatogram at their expected retention times. Find out what they are.

Tip #7:  Why Validation Systems Alone Don’t Solve Your Analyzer Problems

It’s important to realize that validation systems can only detect analyzer problems, not fix them. Unfortunately, figuring out the underlying cause of a process GC’s failure is usually the most difficult part. Learn what you can do.

What is a process gas chromatograph?

A process gas chromatograph is a process analyzer that continually and autonomously measures the amount of one or more components in a gas or liquid sample stream by separating the target analytes from the rest of the sample and then detecting them. Typically, process GCs are used in chemical and petrochemical plants and oil and gas refineries. Measurements from the process GC are sent to the plant process control system, where the data is used to regulate plant operations and make decisions about process optimization, product quality and plant safety.
